From Adventures of a DIY Mom
This block is based on a 3x3 block
This block is one that looks like a more complicated version of the Shoo Fly block.
It is based on a 5x5 grid with units that use HST and quarter square triangles. It can also be made with large HST's in the middle that have the straight sides as long as two of the squares in the grid. This is the more common variation although it is harder to see the "grid".
The corner sections can also be made with four diamonds, two triangles and a square, although this can involve Y seams.
Incidentally the different versions of the names come from this blog post on the 90 Years Ago blog which looks at vintage quilts and quilt blocks.

Erin Underwood uses diamonds to make her block here -Flying Geese 9 BOM with geese border
This You Tube tutorial uses EPP
It is also worth mentioning that Accuquilt also make a goose track die that also constructs the block from diamonds.
Although it is a 5x5 block it can also be classed as an uneven nine patch since the corner units are constructed first and then it is finally constructed as a nine patch.
More nine patch blocks
This block is based on a nine patch with four patches in the corners and quarter square triangles at the sides.

This is not the O block used with the X block to make an x's and o's quilt (which is based on a 2x2 grid) this is a variation of a snowball block based on a 3 x 3 grid - that being said if you want to make an XOXO quilt with this version make the blocks 6" or 12" and they will still fit together.
This version is from Generations Quilt and comes in five sizes
This block is a single paw print or leaf depending on how you look at it and uses whole squares and HST's. You can also see it is a subunit of the larger Bear Paw block
This version is from Generations Quilt and comes in multiple sizes
Other variations use four of the single "paws" and arrange as a four patch

Stuck for ways to use the Shoo Fly block to make a quilt?
Try this short.
This block is based on a 3x3 grid. The central square is a whole square in an accent colour. The side subunits are half rectangles- in this colourway the colour is towards the centre. The corner subunits are made from two flying geese units.

HST's and small squares make this simple block which was popular in the 1930's. It is really a simple pinwheel which has sashing made from squares added between the HST's. Choose colours the make the "blades" a unified colour or highlight the central squares.

This is yet another Double Star block - this time it looks like a Sawtooth Star but it is based on a 3x3 grid. Like this Double Star block it gives the illusion on the Sawtooth Star being bordered or layered but is not as heavy looking IMHO
This tutorial from Carol Thelen uses Accuquilt.
