uneven nine patch - sheep fold block - puss in the corner

The sheep fold block is an example of an uneven nine patch block where although it is a simple 3x3 grid not all the pieces of the grid are square - or the same size. The centre block is bigger than the others which in turn forces the outside "side" pieces to become rectangles like so

Whilst there are no hard and fast rules as to how big the squares are there are a couple of videos on YouTube that show this block.
The first is from the Quilt Codex channel and uses yardage to rotary cut and sew the squares individually.  The final block using the sizes given is eight and a half inches unfinished.

The second is by the wonderful Jenny Doan from the Missouri Star Quilt company and uses layer cake (10 inch) squares to make what she is calling "the Ground Cover Quilt".

And finally here is what you get with the same block when two of the smaller squares are the same colour as the background and the whole thing is set on point

Aunt Nancy's Favourite- a four patch block

This is an example of a four patch block.  It uses half square triangles, and quarter square triangles as subunits.

To draft the Aunt Nancy's Favourite block start with a 4 x 4 grid.
in the four corner square we want to draw a diagonal line to make the half square triangles.
Draw another line from the point where the diagonal line meets the edge of the grid on the top left to the point where diagonal line meets the bottom right - it should go through the intersections on the grid making more half square triangles as it goes.
Draw another line parallel to the last one from the left hand top side to the bottom right.
Now do the same to draw two lines from the diagonal line in the top right to bottom left.  As a check all the lines should go through the intersections.
We now need to add some lines for quarter square triangles. Put you ruler across the intersections shown by the red line below.
We don't want to draw all the way across this line - just the middle two sections.

Repeat for other four corners.  Your draft should look like this.
Break out the colours and use the example above as a guide.
