Aunt Nancy's Favourite- a four patch block

This is an example of a four patch block.  It uses half square triangles, and quarter square triangles as subunits.

To draft the Aunt Nancy's Favourite block start with a 4 x 4 grid.
in the four corner square we want to draw a diagonal line to make the half square triangles.
Draw another line from the point where the diagonal line meets the edge of the grid on the top left to the point where diagonal line meets the bottom right - it should go through the intersections on the grid making more half square triangles as it goes.
Draw another line parallel to the last one from the left hand top side to the bottom right.
Now do the same to draw two lines from the diagonal line in the top right to bottom left.  As a check all the lines should go through the intersections.
We now need to add some lines for quarter square triangles. Put you ruler across the intersections shown by the red line below.
We don't want to draw all the way across this line - just the middle two sections.

Repeat for other four corners.  Your draft should look like this.
Break out the colours and use the example above as a guide.
