Incidentially the centre of the block is an irregular shoo fly block with larger block in the centre which gives an example of how any 4x4 block can be expanded with an HST border

More 3x3 blocks

Wyoming

Wyoming is another 3x3 block that looks more complicated than it is.  The block uses square and rectangles along with HST's and flying geese blocks- however you can ditch the flying geese and use HST's side by side instead.

 There is a more complicated version - Wyoming Valley which is the same except that it has a square in a square in the centre

Irish Chain

 This a traditional quilt pattern that gives a lattice kind of effect.

Alternate blocks are used to make the trellis and the gaps in between the trellis can be used to highlight quilting patterns, show off applique or place mini blocks within your design.

Irish Chain Quilts can be single, double or triple
