Birds in Air - a nine patch block

one of the many blocks with this name , this is one of the simpler ones, basically you have one side of the half square triangle made from 9 smaller triangles.  Variations for the number of small triangles that make up the bigger half square triangle are the commonest variation with have four of the single blocks arranged together in a four patch as another.

Quilt codex include cutting instructions for a 9 inch block

Written instructions from Chock-A-Block for a block that is 8 inches finished.

this one is from adventures of a DIY mom and is a 9 inch block

and another from Eleanor Burns and Quilt In  A Day which makes the blocks using a two at a time method

Ribbon Star

There are more than one block design called the ribbon star.  This one is a variation of the sawtooth star that uses a square-in-a-square for the centre of the block.

The centre can be constructed from four half square triangles back to back or from a square in a square block formed by adding half triangles to the sides of a square.

this version by Teresa Downunder uses four HST's

Sewing Parts Online breaks it down in under two minutes flat

The carnaby street free pattern uses the ribbon star as an alternate block

Sawtooth Star Variations

Based upon this simple star block these variations change the central square into something else

From the Sewing Studio we have a four patch in the centre constructed from 2 and a half inch squares which could have come from jelly roll strips or minicharms

This short shows a quarter square triangle in the centre

This short uses a pinwheel in the centre

Tracy at The Sewing Channel uses crumbs to make the fabric and then makes the pinwheel version

This variation uses a square within a square in the centre

this version also creates a square within a square and gives it another name -the ribbon star

Variable Star/eight pointed star/Evening Star/Ann's Doll Quilt/Cluster of Stars/Square & Points/Nameless Star/Saw Tooth Star

This one is THE classic square with star points.  Star points may be added using flying geese or half square triangles back-to-back.

Here it shines on it's own but is often used as the centre of other more complicated blocks.

For example, Blackford's beauty, Amish Star

And there is always the variations that break up that central square into a pinwheel, a nine patch, etc

For example, star puzzle

Double Pinwheel

A lovely block that looks like a lot of work.  This one uses partial seams in construction which turn out to not be as terrifying a people think!

This version is from Fons and Porter and finishes at 10 inches

Contrary Husband Block

Unlike the Contrary Wife block the contrary husband block is not as well known.  With it's large central square it is a great place to use those special focal fabrics.

This version from Fat Quarter Shop uses partial seams in the construction

English Ivy
